Rosa Burgess | Empowerment, non-conformity, and desire
Low Volume 341 Seven Sisters Road London N15 6RD

Mixed media artist Rosa Burgess creates analog and digital collages using photomontage, painting, and found materials. Cut and collaged by hand using a scalpel and glue, her juxtapositions recall a rich art history of photomontage, harking back to Linder Sterling, Hannah Hoch, and the Dadaists.
Using publications from the 1960s and 70s predominantly, Rosa’s collages confront gender construction and its ties to consumer culture and capitalism. Her collages combine soft advertising images such as kittens and flowers, with hyper-sexualised imagery from male-centric publications including bodybuilding magazines and old fetish zines. By combining opposing societal notions of femininity Rosa’s photomontages evoke empowerment, non-conformity, and desire.
